Pennsylvania's Eleven Public Cyber Charter Schools Met 42 Of 45 AYP Academic Performance Targets.

Whether or not a school makes the federally-mandated Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) mark does not give a complete account of the school's overall academic performance. Yet opponents of Pennsylvania's cyber charter schools have charged that these public schools are academic failures based solely on this single overall AYP mark.

Nation's Only Charter School For The Autistic Prepares Students For The Working World

Over 1.5 million Americans are diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder, a brain difference that affects how one thinks, communicates, and interacts with others. Established in 2000 through an effort of many parents, professionals, the Autism Society of Pittsburgh, and the Autism Society of Westmoreland County, the Spectrum Charter School educates autistic students with learning challenges including autism spectrum disorders between the ages of 13-21 from fourteen neighboring school districts.

Existing in Pennsylvania for less than a decade, charter schools are a relatively new concept in the Commonwealth's system of education. Lincoln Charter School Donates to Katrina Victims

Students, staff, and board members at the Lincoln Charter School in York, PA have raised $4,000 to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. The money was collected during a dress-down day where students paid to wear casual clothes rather than their required uniforms. Some students went over and above by going door-to-door in their neighborhoods, asking friends, neighbors, and families to contribute.

And although many companies have gone beyond federals laws by establishing policies that promote workplace diversity, minority representation in many high paying jobs is still lacking.
