Lehigh Valley Academy - Only School In Region To Offer Full International Baccalaureate Continuum
Posted June 10, 2009

Lehigh Valley Academy Regional Charter School (LVA) received official notification that it has earned Middle Years Programme authorization from the International Baccalaureate Organization (IB). LVA is now one of only 13 schools in the United States and the only school in the Lehigh Valley to offer all three IB programmes.

The IB offers high quality programmes that feature global foundations, critical thinking, and collaborative learning. There are three IB programmes: Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP) and Diploma Programme (DP). LVA was first authorized to offer the PYP for students in Kindergarten through grade 5 in 2006. In 2007 LVA followed with the authorization of the DP for grades 11 and 12 and the recent addition of the Middle Years Programme allows the LVA to offer the full International Baccalaureate continuum.

Susan Mauser, LVA's Chief Academic Officer, led the effort to achieve authorization in all three programmes. Mauser commented, "Being authorized to offer the full continuum of the International Baccalaureate has been our goal since we opened our doors in 2002. We are thrilled to be considered an International Baccalaureate School."

The IB is an acclaimed approach to learning and considered a gold standard. It is currently offered to 688,000 International Baccalaureate students at 2,540 schools in 133 countries.

Dr. Barry G. Cohen, LVA's CEO, added, "It is a huge tribute to our teachers and administrators to have accomplished this in the short seven years the school has been in existence. Now, we can further help all our students develop their intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills so they will be prepared to live learn and work in the rapidly changing world of the 21st century."

LEHIGH VALLEY ACADEMY (LVA) is a public, K-12 charter school located in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. LVA is committed to providing a quality choice in education built on a global foundation of academic excellence, active parental involvement, and applied character development, by integrating technology into innovative teaching strategies and best learning practices.
