House Education Committee Moves In Support Of Charter School Families
April 4, 2008
HARRISBURG - The Pennsylvania Coalition of Charter Schools applauds the House Education Committee for supporting school choice in spite of pressure from special interests. The Committee today voted down a bill that could have shut down charter schools that are progressing toward improving test scores.
House Bill 1833 would have allowed school districts to close charter schools whose students during two consecutive years scored below the traditional public schools where the majority of those charter school students reside-even if the schools met standards set forth in their charter or in relevant law or regulation.
"House Bill 1833 was nothing more than a discriminatory punishment that would have harmed charter school children," said Dr. Timothy Daniels, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Coalition of Charter Schools. "Some charter schools attract students who do not do well in traditional public schools. In many cases, two years is just not enough time for students to get up to grade level, let alone achieve their academic potential. We applaud the House Education Committee for recognizing students achieve greater academic success after remaining in a charter school over several years."
