Schools That Attended The First ERIP in Philadelphia:
November 12, 2007
Wow; more than 800 attended the day; more than 50 CEOs attended the luncheon. A huge effort by everyone involved. In working with the planning committee of Larry Jones (Richard Allen Preparatory), Karen DelGuercio (MaST), John Badagliacco (The Prep), Paul Stadelberger (New Foundations), Jerry Santilli (First Philadelphia), Andre Williams (People for People), Francine Fulton (Imani), Jurate Krokys (Independence), Angela Corosanite (Philadelphia Performing Arts) and Christy Rucker (PCCS), I was struck by the enthusiasm that everyone had for this "instructional practices" event. And, of course, the committee really rolled up their sleeves and worked hard! Thanks!
And, thank you to the 23 school that participated. In so doing, you demonstrated that charter public schools are committed to staff development for developing quality instructional practices.
The majority of the schools contributed a workshop to the "selected topics" portion of the day. We know that teachers and staff in these school worked hard to share their quality programs with teachers in other charter schools. Given the daily work load that these folks have, this extra "above and beyond" is outstanding.
And, special note goes out to the many members of our PCCS Charter School Resource Center who also, presented: Stacey Hill from Alliance for Progress, Veronica Joyner from Math Civics and Sciences, and Jacqueline Edmunds from Edmund's Educational Enterprises. Latsha Davis Yohe and McKenna contributed a workshop on special education. Prime among our PCCS Charter School Resource Center providers was the DCIU, whose plenary programs on Data Driven Assessment were outstanding!
New Foundations CS deserves a special mention because every single one of their teachers conducted a "Think, Pair and Share" workshop with fellow teachers! Outstanding. The results of these "focus-style" groups will be used by PCCS in working to set up our emerging Charter School Accountability Center, which will features that emphasize professional development. Shira Cohen Woolf, a staff member at New Foundations CS, worked hard on organizing this with her fellow staff members and is tabulating all the teacher responses. She then also presented an afternoon workshop to boot!
CEOs/principals/school leaders. Please help us achieve closure on the day by batching and sending your school's Act 48 and conference evaluation sheet (2 sides of one sheet) to:
