Senator Pileggi Wins "Trailblazer Award" for Support of Charter Schools

HARRISBURG - Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi (R-Delaware) recently received the 2007 Trailblazer Award from the Pennsylvania Coalition of Charter Schools. The Trailblazer Award is presented each year to a leader in the charter school movement, according to PCCS.
"Senator Pileggi has proven time and time again to be a true leader in the charter school movement," said Lawrence F. Jones Jr., president of the Pennsylvania Coalition of Charter Schools. "His advocacy on behalf of charter schools and their parents is the reason he deserved our Trailblazer Award. We look forward to continuing to work with Senator Pileggi to provide quality educational options for our children."
Sen. Pileggi said he was honored by the award. "I've seen first-hand the positive impact that quality charter schools can have on children," he said. "By taking an innovative approach to education, they can really focus on the individual needs of their students."
The first charter school opened its doors in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1992. Today, more than 3,600 charter schools serve over 1 million children across 40 states and the District of Columbia.
The Pennsylvania Coalition of Charter Schools' mission is "to provide information and guidance to persons wishing to start a charter public school; to act in an advisory capacity to the Pennsylvania State Department of Education in matters concerning charter public schools; to act as a monitor to charter public school legislation; and, to focus and promote efforts to strengthen charter public school legislation."
