The mission of KIPP Philadelphia Schools (KPS) is to develop the character, knowledge, and skills of our students so they will succeed in college, giving them the freedom to shape their futures and positively affect their communities. Our vision is to achieve our mission at critical mass - a cluster of schools in Philadelphia - thereby reinvigorating public education in this city through the performance of our students and the leadership of our educators. Within the next eight years, KIPP programming in Philadelphia will include ten schools, over 4,400 students, over 370 employees, and an operating budget greater than $60 million. In order to grow an organization that is able to sustain high-performing, efficiently operated schools, KPS seeks an experienced individual for the position of Managing Director of Operations (MDO). The successful candidate for this position is an energetic individual who will support this growing organization's operational health by creating and implementing the systems necessary for high-performing back office function.
Position Overview
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the MDO will be responsible for the design, implementation, and efficiency improvements for all areas of operation to allow KPS to fulfill its vision. With initially 2-3 direct reports, the MDO will oversee the following functions:
Operations
- Oversee risk management and legal activities: letters of agreement, contracts, leases, and other legal documents and agreements
- Business insurance: procurement, monitoring, and management
- Strategic Planning: manage evaluation and ongoing revision of KPS strategic business plan
- Real Estate: coordinate and oversee all aspects of real estate strategy and acquisition
- Information technology: manage the Director of Technology; ensure the ongoing maintenance and updating of information systems and infrastructure, including hardware, software, and relevant applications; oversee Power School student information system
- Organizational reporting and monitoring: provide guidance and leadership through management of the KPS metrics and measurement reporting process; collaborate to ensure timely and thorough completion of all KIPP Foundation-, state-, and district-mandated compliance activities; develop regional compliance and reporting calendar
- Office management: oversee administrative functions for the KPS shared services team, ensuring smooth daily operations of Regional Office physical plant and equipment
- Board of Trustees: provide staff support and guidance to the KPS board and act as staff liaison to relevant board committees
- Streamline and oversee operational activities including the grounds and building maintenance and custodial services, transportation systems (as appropriate), and meal programs (as appropriate)
- Manage Regional Office Administrative Assistant
Human Resources
- Manage and oversee the human resource function for KPS, including:
- On-boarding and compensation
- Benefits administration and oversight
- Professional training and development, including new employee orientation
- Retention strategies
- Performance management
- Regulatory oversight and legal compliance (e.g., background checks and certification)
- Oversee creation of KPS Employee Handbook and work with School Leaders to finalize site-based handbooks
- Manage the Director of Recruitment and Selection
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree and substantial experience required, ideally with an MBA
- Non-profit and/or school-related experience preferred
- Experience in a start-up environment preferred
- Ideally has worked in a senior management role with at least 3 years experience in operational/administrative management
- Demonstrated skills in financial planning and analysis with previous experience overseeing human resources, information technology, and legal
- Demonstrated skills in organizational development, personnel management, budget and resource development, and strategic planning
- Excellent people skills, with an ability to partner with a dynamic leadership team, and interact effectively with multiple constituencies
- Flexible and able to multi-task within an ambiguous, fast-moving, entrepreneurial environment, while also driving toward clarity and solutions
- Demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities and guiding investment in people and systems
- Initiative, integrity, leadership, credibility, tenacity, and commitment to the mission and vision of KPS
Compensation
Salary is competitive with other Charter Management Organizations (CMOs) and commensurate with experience. Benefits package included.
