Job Description:
The director of college counseling has overall responsibility for guiding the members of each year's graduating class (80 to 95 seniors) through the transition to post- secondary education. Though not all graduates go directly to college, parents, teachers, and the college counseling staff assume that each graduate will eventually study in a four year institution of higher learning. Some transitions take a few years; the office helps graduates for as long as they need help.
S/he divides the responsibility for the 80 to 95 school recommendations with the assistant director.
The director works with students and parents. S/he:
- reviews, adjusts, and improves the college counseling program each year.
- meets with parents about their children's college process.
- meets with students individually in fall, winter, and spring.
- prepares regular mailings to parents in the spring of the year and to the parents in the fall.
- oversees progress through the fall process of finalizing their list of colleges and sending off applications.
- coordinates with the English department and Writing Center to offer a college essay and application workshop
- helps seniors to understand and decide among their financial aid packages.
- meets with students about PSAT/ SAT/ACT for registration, administration, and results
- works with Director of Technology to prepare students' final transcripts
The director works with college representatives. S/he
- visits college campuses to establish and maintain mutually beneficial relationships with college admission staffs.
- Coordinates college visits on site and off site
- speaks on the phone with college representatives to discuss applicants
- serves as the schools college board supervisor
The director enjoys the support of an assistant. The two work together to assure the smooth functioning of collective efforts. The director guides the work of the office through
- weekly office meetings.
- close daily communication, both face-to-face and through email.
- regular contact in July and August.
The director works with the teachers and administration. S/he:
- prepares reports for the board of trustees
- advises the faculty in their writing of college recommendations.
- counsels teachers , parents, and coaches on how to help students through the college selection process.
- prepares and coordinates plans for both PSAT/ SAT/ ACT administration
- works with Head of Academics to ensure all students have appropriate number of credits for graduation
- works with the Head of Academics to maintain AP programs
The director works with the Director of Admissions. S/he:
- organize and participate in Open House
- attend high school expos for potential students
- review all student transcripts for admission to determine if the student has appropriate credits to attend Freire
A strong work ethic, excellent organizational skills, flexibility, ease and experience with computers, and a willingness to coordinate efforts with others will be important qualifications in the director of college counseling.
Enthusiasm for teaching adolescents and working with parents of adolescents is also essential. Experience in a college admission office would be a plus, though not a requirement.
Above all, the next director of college counseling must bring to this job abundant energy and a lifelong desire to learn.
