PA Charter School Law
Pennsylvania's charter school law was enacted in 1997, allowing the Commonwealth to join 41 other states in promoting this mission-driven form of public education. All charter schools are public, nonsectarian schools that provide a valuable option for student success.
Unique to Pennsylvania's charter school law:
- Charter Schools are approved by a sponsoring school board or a public chartering authority
- Charter Schools are allowed freedom from many state regulations
- Charter Schools have the flexibility, authority and responsibility to operate and innovate in exchange for greater accountability
- Charter Schools must participate in all state testing
- Charter Schools may not discriminate in admission and must select students by lottery
