Another Cyber Charter Hearing Scheduled for September 19th in Harrisburg
September 5, 2007
Many of the families with children in Pennsylvania's Cyber Charter Public Schools wrote their State Legislators last spring to voice their opposition to proposed legislation that would have reduced funding for cyber charter schools by more than fifty percent. These letters connected; the issue of reducing cyber school funding to dysfunctional levels was postponed to the following school year: 2007-2008. Two hearings on the topic were held this summer in the Western part of the State. Although PCCS, cyber school families, and cyber charter school financial experts were all heard, officials on the other side of the issue, including the PA Secretary of Education, still continue to call for reduced funding. And, alarmingly, Representative Beyer's proposed anti-cyber school legislation also calls for student enrollment deadlines each year of May 30 (for the following school year) and a reduction in cyber charter schools' independence. She suggests that regular public school officials be place on all cyber school Boards of Trustees. Proposed legislation also calls for the ability of school districts to block your student's enrollment in a Cyber Charter School if the local school district creates its own cyber program. This is a reduction in your school choice.
Now, at the very beginning of a busy school year, a third hearing for proposed cyber school legislation has been scheduled for Harrisburg for Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 1 PM in the State Museum. Please take the time to visit the PCCS website and write another letter. And, talk to you son or daughter's cyber school about attending the hearng. Show our opponents that cyber charter schools are in this legislative struggle for the long run. Your right to choose is at stake.
One behalf of the more than 20,000 students in cyber charter public schools in Pennsylvania, thanks!
